Working from the Center Out
Cast on 6 stitches at the center. Begin as described for Closed Center Cast On #1, pages 22-24, but increase 6 stitches instead of 8 on each increase round, as described below.
Place a split marker in every other stitch to mark the three corners (see Using Markers in Circular Knitting: Split markers, pages 42-43).
Round 1: Knit around, working K-yo-k into each marked stitch. (6 stitches increased)
Round 2: Purl around, working P-yo-P into each marked stitch. (6 stitches increased)
Round 3: Knit.
Round 4: Repeat Round 2.
Round 5: Repeat Round 1.
Round 6: Purl.
Repeat these 6 rounds until the triangle is as big as you like.
End with one of the knit rounds, then bind off in purl or turn over to the “wrong” side and bind off in knitting. Weave in the ends using the bind-off tail to make the beginning and end of the bind off continuous (see pages 56-57).
Pentagon Potholder
Working a column of knit stitches at each corner and incorporating double decreases into these for shaping results in a very different look from the garter stitch corners of the triangle or the paired decreases of the octagon: the corners are more pointed and more clearly defined. In order to work the double decreases without constantly shifting stitches between needles, it’s important to place the decreases at the center of needles, rather than at the ends. This entails some rearrangement of the stitches to set things up properly as you begin the first round.
